Baseball Drops Penn State, 6-2

Richmond, Va. – The Princeton baseball team registered its first victory of the season with a 6-2 decision over the Penn State Nittany Lions at Pitt Field on Saturday morning.
Freshman Joseph Flynn had a three-run double to help the Tigers' offense. Junior Nick Hernandez had a team-high two hits while senior Danny Hoy hit his 12th career home run. Senior Luke Strieber struck out six over six innings and allowed just two earned runs to pick up the victory. Junior Chris Giglio and senior Danny Thomson threw a combined three scoreless innings of relief.
Penn State's Nick Riotto led off the game with a triple down the right field line. The next batter, Conlin Hughes hit a ground ball to Princeton third basemen Billy Arendt, who threw Riotto out at home. After Hughes stole second, Greg Guers singled him home to give the Lions a 1-0 lead.
Hoy responded in the Tigers' half of the first inning with a home run to left field to tie the game. In the team's next at bat, Flynn and junior Paul Tupper led off with walks. Senior Andrew Christie's sacrifice bunt moved them each up a base. Freshman Asher Lee-Tyson's RBI groundout got Flynn home to put Princeton ahead, 2-1.
After giving up a run in the first, Strieber settled down to retire 12 of the next 15 Penn State batters. The Lions broke through against the Tigers' starter on a sacrifice fly by Tyler Kendall in the top of the sixth inning. Princeton did not take long to answer as it had its first two hitters reach base in the bottom of the sixth. Two at bats later, freshmen pinch-hitter Jesper Horsted came up with a RBI base hit to give the Tigers a 3-2 advantage.
Flynn added more insurance one inning later with a three-run double to right field that scored Zack Belski, Hernandez and Arendt. Giglio and Thomson allowed just one base runner over the final three innings to close out the victory. The Princeton pitching staff struck out nine Penn State hitters.
Princeton improves to 1-3 on the season while Penn State falls to 5-8. The Tigers get continue their road trip with a game vs. NY Tech tomorrow at 10 a.m. Senior Cameron Mingo will take the ball for Princeton.
