RICHMOND, Va. – The Princeton baseball team was defeated by the NYIT Bears, 2-1 at Pitt Field on Sunday afternoon.
Sophomore Asher Lee-Tyson had a career-high three hits while freshmen Joseph Flynn had two knocks. Senior Billy Arendt reached base three times with three walks. Senior Cameron Mingo went six innings, striking out six, allowing just two hits and two unearned runs. Sophomore Nick Brady threw two scoreless innings of relief, striking out two in the loss.
The Tigers put a runner in scoring position and then loaded the bases in the first two innings, but couldn't push across a runner. Mingo retired nine straight Bears' hitters between the second and fourth frames to keep NYIT off the scoreboard.
Arendt had a seven-pitch walk to begin the fifth inning. Following a fly out, junior Zack Belski walked and then Flynn had an infield single to load the bases with one out. Junior Nick Hernandez lifted a fly ball to left field, but NYIT's David Kosakavich's throw beat Arendt to the plate, preventing the run from scoring.
Both teams finally broke through in the sixth inning. After junior Paul Tupper got on base, he stole second and came around to score on an error to put the Tigers in front, 1-0. In bottom of the inning, NYIT's Frank Sanacore led off with a triple. Three hitters later, a fielder's choice allowed him to touch home to tie the game at 1-all. A passed ball several batters after would give NYIT a 2-1 advantage.
Princeton's best comeback chance was in the eighth inning. With one out, Lee-Tyson singled, stole second and moved to third on a wild pitch. Back-to-back walks would load the bases for the Tigers with two out, but Lee-Tyson was forced out at home on a ground ball back to the pitcher to end the threat. Head coach Scott Bradley's team finished with 17 runners left on base.
The Tigers will take on Richmond tomorrow at 3:00 p.m. Junior Chad Powers will start for Princeton, looking to for his first victory of the season.
