Baseball Beats Richmond, 5-3, Travels to Old Dominion Tomorrow
March 14, 2016 | Baseball
RICHMOND, Va. - The Princeton baseball team nabbed its second win of the season with a 5-3 victory over the Richmond Spiders at Pitt Field on Monday afternoon.
Senior Danny Hoy had a team-high three hits while freshmen Asher Lee-Tyson had two hits and a RBI. Junior Nick Hernandez scored twice and freshmen Joseph Flynn had a RBI and run scored. Senior Chad Powers registered the win after going six innings, scattering nine hits, allowing just three earned runs while senior Danny Thomson nabbed the save.
The Tigers started the scoring with a RBI groundout from junior Paul Tupper in the second inning. Richmond's Doug Kraeger tied the contest in the bottom of the frame with a home run. Princeton added three more runs in the third inning, two via a passed ball and wild pitch. Flynn followed with a RBI single to put the Tigers in front, 4-1.
Back-to-back RBI singles by the Spiders cut their deficit to one in their half of the fourth inning. Richmond was looking to add more with a runner on third base and one out, but Powers induced a double play to escape the jam. The home team had two more runners in scoring position in the sixth, but Powers finished his outing with a ground out to finish the threat.
Lee-Tyson knocked home an insurance tally in Princeton's last at-bat to set the score at 5-3. The Spiders had more one rally attempt in the bottom of the ninth. Back-to-back walks and a wild pitch had runners on the corners with no out, but Thomson struck out a batter and got a double play to put the Tigers in the win column.
With the victory, Princeton was named Spider Invitational Champions. The Tigers continue their Spring Break trip with a two-game set at Old Dominion beginning tomorrow at 6 p.m.
