SAN DIEGO, Calif. – The No. 14 Princeton women's water polo team defeated the No. 20 San Diego State Aztecs, 8-5, at the Aztec Aquaplex on Saturday evening.
Sophomore Haley Wan (two goals, one assist) and freshmen Lindsey Kelleher (one goal, two assists) each had three points to pace the Tigers' offense. Four different players snagged three steals while sophomore Helena van Brande made eight saves to help the team to its sixth straight victory.
The Aztecs led 2-1 after the first quarter before the Tigers rattled off three straight to take a 4-2 advantage. The game of scoring runs continued as San Diego State added three consecutive goals to retake the lead, 5-4 at the 4:24 mark of the third quarter.
About a minute and half later, sophomore Emily Smith tied the contest from right outside the five-meter mark, setting the score at 5-all. Wan's second goal of the night put the Tigers in front for good with 1:09 to go in the frame. Sophomore Sydney Cheong and junior Morgan Hallock had insurance tallies as the Tigers held the Aztecs scoreless over the final 11 minutes of game to secure their 10th win of the season.
Sitting at No. 14 in the latest Collegiate Water Polo Association's (CWPA) varsity poll, the Tigers will take on the higher ranked No. 11 UC-San Diego Tritons tomorrow at 1:15 p.m. (10:15 a.m. Pacific Time) before battling Chapman at 6:15 p.m. (3:15 p.m. Pacific Time).
