No. 14 Women's Water Polo Splits at San Diego State Invite

SAN DIEGO – The No. 14 Princeton women's water polo team split its two games on Sunday afternoon at the Atzec Aquaplex, losing a close 9-8 battle to the No. 11 UC-San Diego Tritons and winning a 13-3 decision vs. Chapman. The Tigers' California trip will continue next Friday at the Loyola Marymount Invitational against Azusa Pacific (12:00 p.m.).

The sophomore duo of Emily Smith (three goals) and Chelsea Johnson (two goals) combined for five tallies to lead the Tigers. Sophomore Helena van Brande made five saves and had a team-high five steals in the loss.
The Tigers, looking for the upset, started quickly, registering three straight goals to begin the game. The Tritons closed within at one at the end of the first quarter. The match looked destined for an even score at the half, but an UC-San Diego goal with about 90 seconds to go put the Tritons ahead, 5-4 at the intermission.
The No. 11 ranked team in the country scored three of the first four tallies of the second half en route to a 9-6 lead after three quarters. The Tigers made one more run with goals from Johnson and Kelleher to cut their deficit to one, at 9-8, with 2:20 to go. UC-San Diego held Princeton off the board the rest of the way to score the 9-8 decision.

The women's water polo team raced out to a 5-0 lead after the first quarter and a 10-0 halftime lead before cruising to a 13-3 victory over Chapman. Sophomore Haley Wan led the team with five points (two goals, three assists) while junior Morgan Hallock had a team-best three goals. Freshmen Charlotte Valentine secured three steals as well. Johnson got the start in goal for Princeton, making four saves in the first half before Wan finished out the rest of the contest with five saves in the win.
