No. 15 Women's Water Polo Wins Two at LMU Invite

LOS ANGELES – The No. 15 Princeton women's water polo team had a stellar start to the Loyola Marymount Invitational with a 9-8 victory over the Azusa Pacific Cougars and 12-8 win over the Whittier Poets this afternoon at the Burns Aquatics Center.

Sophomore Haley Wan and freshmen Lindsey Kelleher had two goals to pace the Tigers' offense. Junior Morgan Hallock and freshmen Eliza Britt gathered two points each (one goal, one assist). Sophomore Helena van Brande made five saves and snagged three steals in the win.
The Tigers rattled off three of the first four goals of the contest to take a 3-1 lead with 5:38 left in the first half. After Azusa Pacific scored, Princeton ended the second quarter with three of four tallies to take a 6-3 lead into halftime.
Princeton recorded the first goal of the third quarter, but Azusa Pacific had the final two goals of the frame to set the score at 7-5 after 24 minutes. Senior Pippa Temple's goal with 3:08 left in the contest put the Tigers up two, but the Cougars posted the next two goals to tie the score at 8-all. Wan's tally with under two minutes to go proved to be the game-winner.

Wan continued her outstanding day with four more tallies and two assists vs. Whittier. Britt nabbed two goals and three assists while winning all four sprints. Hallock and Kelleher also collected two goals apiece.
Princeton and Whittier played evenly over the 14 minutes of the game as each team scored three times. Three straight goals by the Tigers made it 6-3 with two minutes remaining in the first half, but a goal from the Poets would make the halftime score, 6-4.
Another three-goal spurt pushed Princeton in front by four, 9-5, however Whittier did not go away, going on its own three-goal rally to get within one, 9-8 with 58 seconds left in the third quarter. The Tigers' defense pitched a shutout over the final eight minutes while tacking on three more insurance goals to complete the scoring.
