LOS ANGELES, Calif. – The No. 15 Princeton water polo team saw its three-match winning streak come to an end with a tough 7-6 decision to the No. 14 Loyola Marymount Lions at the Burns Aquatic Center on Saturday afternoon.
Freshmen Lindsey Kelleher led Princeton with two goals and an assist. Sophomore Haley Wan had another multi-point outing with two assists. Wan and sophomore Sydney Cheong recorded two steals each while sophomore Helena van Brande had seven saves in the loss.
The host Lions got on the scoreboard first with a tally from Emily Byrne at the 5:45 mark of the first period. Loyola Marymount was looking to take that lead into the second frame, but senior Pippa Temple shot one by the Lions' goalie, Sky Flores with three seconds remaining.
Sophomore Chelsea Johnson gave Princeton a 2-1 advantage 50 seconds into the second quarter, however Loyola Marymount tied the contest about a minute and half later. 22 seconds after the Lions goal, junior Morgan Hallock put Princeton in front again. Sophomore Emily Smith and Kelleher nabbed tallies for the Tigers as the road team led 5-2 at halftime.
Princeton was held off the scoreboard in the third frame as Loyola Marymount cut its deficit to one after 24 minutes of play. The Lions' Emily Byrne made the score 5-all at the 7:34 point of the final quarter, but Kelleher's second of the afternoon put back on top with 3:52 left in the match.
