QUEENS, N.Y. – Senior Danny Hoy continued his stellar hitting with his third consecutive multi-hit outing as the Princeton baseball team (14-13) nabbed its third straight victory with a 9-4 decision over the St. John's Red Storm (17-12-1) at Jack Kaiser Stadium on Wednesday evening.
Hoy had two hits, two RBI and a run. Three other players for the Tigers had at least two hits while junior Zack Belski, freshman Joseph Flynn and junior Danny Baer scored twice. Freshman Ryan Smith allowed an earned run in three innings of relief to secure his first collegiate win.
Princeton had its first scoring threat in the its second at-bat. Belski led off with a walk and moved to second two batters later on a single through the right side from Baer. Following a walk to junior Paul Tupper that loaded the bases, a fielding error plated two runs for the Tigers. St. John's put a runner on third with two outs in the bottom portion of inning, but senior Chris Bodurian got a strikeout to conclude the threat.
Horsted led off the third with a single and advanced to second on a failed pick-off attempt. Hoy then ripped a base hit to right field that allowed Horsted to touch home to make the score, 4-0. The senior second baseman created havoc on the base paths as he stole second, progressed to third on a fly out and scored on a single by Belski. Another Red Storm error would give the Tigers their fifth run of the contest. Princeton tacked on two more in the inning and finished with five runs on six hits along with three Red Storm errors in the third.
St. John's got on the scoreboard on a RBI double by Anthony Borcato and run-scoring singles from Gui Gingras and Alex Caruso in the fourth. Hoy got one back as his infield single scored senior Andrew Christie to make it 8-3. It was the senior's 10th hit in the last three games. The two teams exchanged tallies in the seventh inning to conclude the scoring.
The Red Storm put together one more threat in the eighth inning with two runners in the scoring position for the top of the order, but junior Chris Giglio got a fly out to wrap up the frame.
The Princeton baseball team heads into a big Ivy League weekend as it takes on the Penn Quakers in a four-game set at Clarke Field. The Tigers are one game up on the Quakers in the Gehrig Division. The two teams will play a doubleheader on Saturday (Apr. 16) and Sunday (Apr. 17).
