April 16, 2016 | Baseball
PRINCETON, N.J. – The Princeton baseball team (16-13, 8-2 Ivy) swept the Penn Quakers (13-17, 5-5 Ivy), 7-2 and 3-1, in Ivy League play at Clarke Field on Saturday afternoon. With the two victories, the Tigers pushed their lead to three games in the Gehrig Division race.
Princeton 7, Penn 2 - Box Score
Senior Billy Arendt was perfect at the plate, registering three hits including a three-run home run and two runs. Freshman Joseph Flynn was 2-for-2 with a run scored. Senior Cameron Mingo picked up his fifth win of the season, allowing just two earned runs in four innings. Sophomore Nick Brady struck out two over the final three frames to nab the save for the Tigers.
The Quakers got a player in scoring position in the first inning, putting runners on first and second with two out, but Mingo recorded a fly out to end the threat.
Princeton loaded the bases behind back-to-back hits from Arendt, senior Danny Hoy and then a walk to junior Nick Hernandez. Junior Zack Belski lifted a fly ball to right field that scored Arendt to put the Tigers in front, 1-0. Flynn responded one batter later on a run-scoring single up the middle to give Princeton its second run.
Penn cut its deficit in half on a home run by Matt O'Neill in the top of the second inning. The Quakers had another scoring opportunity in the third, however Mingo got a strikeout and ground out to retire the side.
Matt McGeagh tied the Ivy League contest at 2-all on a RBI double to right-center field in the top of the fourth for Penn. With runners on the corners and two out, Penn's Ryan Mincher lifted a long fly ball to the left-center field gap, but junior Danny Baer tracked it down to finish the fourth.
After giving up the lead, Princeton answered with a crooked number in its half of the fourth. Sophomore Asher Lee-Tyson fell behind in the count and fouled off at least six pitches before eventually working a walk to load the bases with two out for the top of the order. Freshman Jesper Horsted sequentially lined a hit down the left field line that scored Baer and Flynn to give the Tigers a 4-2 advantage. The next hitter, Arendt, then socked a ball over the left field fence to stretch Princeton's lead to five (7-2).
Brady did not give up a run in his save chance. The reliever retired five of the first six hitters he faced and then got three consecutive outs after posting two base runners in the seventh.
Princeton 3, Penn 1 - Box Score
Arendt continued his hot streak as he was not retired in four plate appearances. In fact, the senior third baseman got on base every time he came to bat in the two games. Hoy and Belski had multi-hit outings in the contest. Junior Chad Powers went eight innings and struck out six in victory.
The home team kept up the offensive fireworks display as Hoy and Arendt hit back-to-back home runs, giving the Tigers a 2-0 lead in the first inning.
Penn got one back a RBI knock by McGeagh in the second. The Quakers loaded the bases in the frame, but Powers silenced the rally with consecutive strikeouts.
Horsted tripled off the right field wall and then came around to score on a base hit up the middle from Hoy to make the score 3-1 Princeton in the third. The Tigers had a chance to add on in the fifth, stacking the bases with runners, but a double play concluded the inning.
From the third through sixth innings, Powers sent down nine of the 11 batters he faced. In the seventh, the Quakers secured their first extra base hit of the contest with a double, but a flyout put them away.
Senior Danny Thomson went 1-2-3 in the ninth inning to tally the save for the Tigers. For the two games, the Princeton pitching staff held the Ivy League's leading hitter, Gary Tesch, to no hits in nine at-bats.
These two teams will get right back at it tomorrow at Clarke Field with another doubleheader beginning at 12 p.m.
