#10 Open Women Continue Development, Grab Ivy Win Over Columbia
April 02, 2016 | Women's Rowing - Open
After falling to No. 1 Brown by less than three seconds, and staying within .3 of a second of NCAA champion Ohio State, the Princeton 1V posted a winning time of 6:29.5 to top Columbia by more than 26 seconds.
“I was very proud of how we executed our race today,” junior coxswain Amanda Rutherford said. “I think we set out with a very specific goal of always making forward progress throughout the race, and once we broke open water on Columbia, we didn't stop moving until our bow crossed the finish line.
“After last week, we wanted to have a very potent middle 1000 meters, because that's where Brown and Ohio State moved through us, and I thought that we accomplished this goal,” Rutherford added.
Princeton won all four races during the morning, including a solid showing from the second varsity eight. The 2V topped Columbia by more than 21 seconds with a winning time of 6:43.1.
“The 2V was quite happy with our execution and results this morning,” sophomore Rachel Reed said. “We've known that we have the power and a lot of potential in our boat, and this past week we've really been focusing on addressing both our strengths and weaknesses while coming together as a crew. Our split times showed more consistency and aggression in the third quarter of the race, which was something we were definitely focusing on.”
The Tigers will hit the road for the only time this regular season next weekend when they travel to the Cayuga Inlet in Ithaca, N.Y., to take on both Harvard and Cornell for The Class of 1975 Cup. This young squad knows that every weekend is an opportunity to move closer to that top tier, and they felt that today's step was a highly productive one.
“As an overall team, I would say that this weekend was a major development from last weekend,” Rutherford said. “As Lori has said, our roster is pretty young, and every opportunity we get to race is a learning moment. Across the board, we were satisfied with our performances. In this early part of the season, we are looking to improve in any way possible, and I think that over the last week leading into this race there was a sense of determination and urgency that propelled us into a sweep this weekend."
