Princeton Takes Two At Cornell; Wins Gehrig Division Title
April 29, 2016 | Baseball
ITHACA, N.Y. – The Princeton baseball team won the Ivy League Gehrig Division title for the first time since winning the Ivy League Championship in 2011 as it took two games against the Cornell Big Red at Hoy Field, 4-3 and 6-1, on Friday afternoon.
With Princeton's two wins and Penn's two losses to Columbia, the Tigers clinched a berth in the Ivy League Championship Series. Princeton has won seven Ivy League titles in program history.
Princeton 4, Cornell 3 - Box Score
Freshman Jesper Horsted led off the game with a single through the left side. Two batters later, he moved to third base on a double from senior Danny Hoy. A ground out by junior Nick Hernandez gave Princeton its first run of the game. Junior Zack Belski added on to the Tigers' lead with a RBI single up the middle. Hoy made the score 3-0 with a sacrifice fly in the top of the fifth.
Cornell had a hit in each of its first four at-bats, but could not get a run across the plate until the fifth inning. With one out, back-to-back singles put runners on first and second. After a fly out, Mark Fraser ripped a two-run double to left-center field to get the home team within one, 3-2.
Heading into its final at-bat, down by a run, Cornell's C.J. Price began the seventh with a hit to center. Parker Morris pinch-ran for Price and advanced to third base following a sacrifice bunt and single. Dale Wickham would extend the contest with run-scoring knock to center field, tying the contest at 3-all.
It did not take long for Princeton to respond as senior Billy Arendt would begin the next half inning with a double down the left field line. Hernandez came through for the Tigers as he laced a ball through the left side that allowed Arendt to score. Junior Chris Giglio threw a 1-2-3 frame in the bottom of the eighth to finish off the victory for the Tigers.
Princeton 6, Cornell 1 - Box Score
Horsted created havoc with three hits and two runs for Princeton at the top of the order. Junior Chad Powers went eight strong innings, giving up just two hits and struck out four to register his fifth win of the season. His 2.01 ERA on the season is the best in the Ivy League while his five wins is tied for second.
Just like game one, the Tigers jumped in front in the first inning. Horsted reached on an infield hit and later touched home on a single up the middle from Hernandez.
This time, it was Horsted that knocked in a runner as freshman Joseph Flynn became Princeton's second run in the fifth inning. As Princeton maintained its lead, Powers was motoring down the Big Red.
The junior retired the first 19 hitters he faced before a single by Wickham ended his perfect game with one out in the seventh inning. Wickham swiped second base and then finished Power's shutout bid as he circled the bases on a single from Cole Rutherford.
Flynn secured a sacrifice fly to make the score 3-1 in the top of the eighth. Despite losing the perfect game and shutout, Powers finished his outing with a clean inning in the home half of the eighth.
Princeton put up three more insurance runs in the top of ninth on a wild pitch, RBI single from Hoy, and sacrifice fly from Belski. Senior Danny Thomson did not allow a base runner in the ninth to complete the win.
The two teams will finish the regular season tomorrow at Clarke Field. The first game of the doubleheader is scheduled for 12 p.m.
