The Childs Cup: Columbia and Penn

No. 3 Heavyweights Claim 49th Childs Cup, Enter Loaded Part Of '16 Schedule
April 09, 2016 | Heavyweight Rowing
The varsity eight took control of Overpeck for a convincing win over both Penn and Columbia; the Tigers finished the course in 5:56.3 for a win of nearly 11 seconds over the Quakers.
"I've been pleased with the progress of the entire team so far this season," head coach Greg Hughes said. "After our first weekend of racing here in Princeton, we've taken to the road for the last two. Races on the road often bring new challenges and so far the team has stepped up well to the tests they've faced. Our coxswains have done an especially nice job, learning on the fly and executing well in new and unknown environments."
The undefeated Tiger 2V faced its closest race of the season, but it came up with a winning performance against a game Penn boat. Princeton took the race in 6:03.3, while Penn took second in 6:06.5.
"The 2V put up a solid piece today and I was pleased with the way that they responded to the challenge," Hughes said. "Lots is always learned when a boat races in a close race and that's definitely the case today. We've now got a good feel for what we want to work on as we head into a new week's training and hopefully the 2V will be even better prepared when we face a strong competitor in the weeks to come."
The Princeton 3V had the widest margin of victory during the morning; the boat also improved to 4-0 in 6:11.2 for a 14-second win over Penn.
While the Tigers have beaten a trio of Top-20 teams through the early part of the season, they are about to see the highest level of Eastern competition over the next three weeks.
"We don't get to race very much in our sport, especially given the amount that we train," Hughes said. "This makes every one of our races very meaningful and our team loves to race. The next few weeks bring some fun match-ups and and we are all extremely excited for the racing over the next few weeks."
That stretch begins next weekend at No. 5 Harvard in the annual Compton Cup regatta. The Crimson have won eight of the last nine Compton Cups, though it was Princeton who will enter Saturday as the reigning champion; the Tigers went 4-for-4 on Lake Carnegie last season, including a V8 win by 4.5 seconds that gave Princeton its 15th Compton Cup.
Princeton has only won one Compton Cup on the Charles River in the last three decades, and it came 10 years ago, when the Tigers' last Sprints championship boat defeated Harvard by more than three seconds.
