EUGENE, Ore. (7/8/16) - Donn Cabral '13 is headed to Rio! Cabral made the US Olympic Team for the second consecutive Olympiad in the men's steeplechase after finishing third on Day 8 of the 2016 US Track & Field Olympic Trials at Historic Hayward Field.
Cabral finished with a time of 8:26.37 to take third behind Evan Jager (8:22.48) and Hillary Bor (8:24.10). Cabral was in the top three for the first three laps before Jager made his move to take over the lead from Mason Ferlic and Cabral dropped to sixth on lap 4. He pushed up one place on lap 5 and was third at the bell. At the final water jump, Stanley Kebeney twisted his ankle and went down and Cabral was able to maneuver around him in the water pit and keep going in fourth place. Cabral then overpowered Andrew Bayer right before the final hurdle and sprinted to the finish in third place.
Â
Princeton assistant track & field coaches Justin Frick '10 and Robby Andrews have both qualified for the finals in their respective events.
Frick is one of 14 that advances to the final on Sunday at 3 p.m., PT. It was a rainy day in Eugene, Oregon and the wet runway led to 12 high jumpers "no height" on the opening height of 2.14 (7-0.25). Frick was the lead off jumper in the field and cleared the height on his third attempt.
Â
The draw of the men's 1500 caused quite a discussion amongst the track community. The first semifinal had four professional/signed athletes out of 13, while the second had 11 of 12 – including Princeton assistant distance coach Robby Andrews. Coached by Princeton head men's cross country coach Jason Vigilante, Andrews sat in the back of the pack as he did during the qualifying race. Just before the bell, Andrews started to make a move up the outside and took fifth place. On the backstretch he moved into fourth and then kicked his way to third at the finish to auto-advance to the final at 3:44.46 (47.54, 1:03.50, 59.79, 53.34). The 12-man final is the final event of the US Trials, on Sunday at 5:20 p.m., PT.
