Princeton assistant coach and Manalapan, N.J., native Robby Andrews has advanced to the semifinals of the men's 1500. Andrews, who is competing in his first Olympics, was third in heat 2 at 8:46.97.
In true Robby Andrews racing style, he stayed patient and steady in the middle of the pack. With two laps remaining, Andrew was in ninth place and seemed to be boxed in on the inside. In the same spot, ninth, at the bell, Andrews got to the outside and started to make his move. He ticked off runners one-by-one and at the final turn he was in third place. Andrews headed across the line in third, behind Algeria's Taoufik Makhloufi at 3:46.82 and Kenya's Elijah Motonei Manangoi at 3:46.83.
Andrews will be joined in the semifinal with fellow American Matthew Centrowitz who claimed fifth in heat 1.
The semifinals will be contested on Friday, Aug. 18 at 7:45 pm ET.
On the soccer pitch, Canada's and Germany's women's teams met for the second time in eight days, but the rematch went the opposite way after a 21st-minute penalty kick from Melanie Behringer and a 60th-minute goal by Sara Daebritz led Germany to a 2-0 win over a Canadian squad that started the game with Tiger alum Diana Matheson '08 as a substitute.
Matheson, who started Canada's first two group-stage games, wins over Australia and Zimbabwe, as well as the quarterfinal-round win over France, entered following the Daebritz goal and played the rest of the way. The Canadians, however, were kept off the board.
Even though Canada's chance to build on its bronze medal from four years ago - won with a 92nd-minute goal by Matheson - went with Tuesday's loss, the Canadians could still duplicate their London finish with a win Friday at noon over host Brazil in São Paulo. The game can be seen on MSNBC, online at NBCOlympics.com and via the NBC Sports app.
