Asom's 2OT Goal Lifts Women's Soccer Over Monmouth 2-1
September 11, 2016 | Women's Soccer
Mimi Asom and her Princeton women's soccer teammates pressed and pressed for the go-ahead goal as Sunday morning turned into Sunday afternoon at Monmouth, and with little more than two minutes to spare, Asom got it.
Overcoming one near-miss after another, Asom took control of a ball in the 18-yard box, wheeled around and fired it past Monmouth keeper Sydney Lavan to deliver a 2-1 double-overtime win over the Hawks and improve to 6-0 on the season.
The win comes in Princeton's final game before a trip to face West Virginia, ranked No. 4 in the nation, Friday night in Morgantown. The Mountaineers are riding a six-game win streak since a season-opening tie at defending national champion Penn State.Â
Each team scored less than two minutes apart midway through the first half, and the score stayed tied at 1-1 for just short of 80 minutes before Asom's winner. Monmouth's Rachelle Ross got the home team on the board in the 26th minute when she got into a one-on-one with Princeton keeper Natalie Grossi, who came out toward the ball before Ross chipped it past Grossi and in. Less than two minutes later, Abby Givens got control of a ball in the box and fired it past Monmouth starting keeper Amanda Knaub to tie it up.
The win contines Princeton's best start since 2002, when the Tigers were 12-0, and is now tied for the third-best start in program history with the 2001 team. Along with the 2002 start, Princeton was 14-0 in 1980, the program's first season of varsity soccer.
Postgame notes:
• Tyler Lussi assisted on both goals, bringing her to 115 career points to better the Princeton record she broke Friday night and put her two points closer to Penn alum Katy Cross's 125, which stands fourth in Ivy history.
• This was Princeton's first game against Monmouth since 2002. Princeton has won the last three in the series, though Monmouth still leads all-time 9-4. This was Princeton's first trip to Monmouth since 1998.
• Freshman Olivia Sheppard became the fourth freshman to start a game this season and Abby Givens became the second freshman, along with Tomi Kennedy, to score her first career goal this season. Both did so on a team that returned 10 starters from last season.Â
• Princeton is unbeaten in its last 10 overtime games, a streak that dates back to 2013. The Tigers have won two in a row and four of those 10, tying the other six.
