Tornetta Selected as Longstreth/NFHCA’s Division I Offensive Player of the Week

PRINCETON, N.J – Most students dread the first week of classes, but not sophomore Sophia Tornetta.
On Monday as she was named the Ivy League Player of the Week and Suburban Transit GoPrincetonTigers.com Athlete of the Week. Tuesday saw her team make the highest jump in the national coaches' poll, improving to No. 10. Today, the striker was honored as the Longstreth/NFHCA's Division I Offensive Player of the Week.
Ranked in the top ten nationally in in goals per game (eighth, 1.33) and points per game (ninth, 3.0), the Plymouth Meeting, Pa., native had a five-point outing vs. then No. 12 Albany last Friday in the team's 3-2 comeback victory. Already with a goal, Tornetta deflected junior Ryan McCarthy's pass in the back of the net to tie the game. Later in the contest, she assisted on the game-winning goal by junior Lexi Quirk with 3:23 to go.
Last Sunday, the sophomore cleared a defender in the circle and swiped a backhanded blast past the goalie as the clock ticked under three minutes remaining, giving her team an insurance goal in a 4-2 win over then No. 10 Delaware.
The No. 10 Princeton Tigers head to No. 14 Virginia on Friday (4 p.m.) before No. 7 Maryland travels to Bedford Field on Sept. 20 (6 p.m.).
