Martin Scores Game Winner as Tigers Top BU on ESPNU
September 16, 2016 | Men's Soccer
PRINCETON, N.J. (9/16/16) - Freshman Benjamin Martin scored the game-winning goal in the 56th minute to lift the Princeton men's soccer team to a 2-1 win over Boston University in an ESPNU televised contest on Friday night on Myslik Field at Roberts Stadium.
Martin also assisted on the first goal, as senior Vikram Pothuri gave the Tigers the 1-0 lead in the 35th minute.
"He's a guy that came to us really late in the process," Princeton assistant coach Ryan Hayward said about Martin. "We knew we had a pretty good player and it was hard to say how he would adjust but he's made the transition quickly. He's a two-way player and he's a big asset for us at this point."
The game winner was set up by sophomore Henry Martin as he crossed the ball from in front of the team bench to junior Daniel Bowkett. Bowkett dribbled before sending a through ball to Martin who got the better for goalie Matt Gilbert who came out to try to prevent the shot. Benjamin Martin pushed the ball past the hands of Gilbert and buried the ball into the back of the net.
Senior defender Mark Romanowski set up the first goal, taking a restart from 60 yards out that was headed down by Martin just outside the 18-yard box where he fell to Pothuri in the center of the box. Pothuri one-timed it with a flick of the right foot for this first goal of the season.
The Terriers took a short-lived lead in the 32nd minute before the Tigers converted on the other end less than four minutes later. Anthony Viteri won the battle for the ball along the sideline and crossed it towards the goal where Magnus Benediktsson got a touch at the near post for his first tally of the season.
"It was good; we scored five goals this week so it's a step in the right direction after only scoring one goal in the first two goals," Hayward said. "I think we're finding our rhythm going forward a little bit and it was also a little bit better organization. I don't think we were at our best last year in our game against American on national TV so I think this helps show that we are a good team, but more importantly than winning on TV is winning that next game after losing our first two."
BU outshot Princeton 15-6 and had five more corners, 6-1. BU put five shots on target, with senior Josh Haberman earning his second straight win with four saves. BU keeper Gilbert stopped two of four shots on net.
The Tigers travel to Drexel on Tuesday, Sept. 20 for a 7 p.m., game.
