No. 14 Virginia Stops No. 10 Field Hockey, 2-0
September 16, 2016 | Field Hockey
CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – Despite a career-high nine shots from junior Ryan McCarthy, the No. 10 Princeton field hockey team lost to the No. 14 Virginia Cavaliers, 2-0 at Turf Field on Friday afternoon.
Seven of McCarthy's nine shots were on goal, but the Tigers could not solve Virginia goalie Lucas Carrera. Princeton took 25 attempts in the game. Sophomore Grace Baylis made a season-best nine stops in the loss.
The host team forced Baylis to make back-to-back saves five minutes into contest. After another stoppage, Virginia received its first corner, but the ball was blocked.
The Tigers' best scoring chance in the first half came in the 21st minute. Freshman Carlotta von Gierke took the corner and found freshman Maddie Bacskai, who sent a shot wide. McCarthy came up with the rebound, but Carrera made the save. On that possession, Princeton was awarded another corner, but Bacskai's try was off the mark.
In the 32nd minute, No. 14 Virginia got on the scoreboard. Off a corner, Nikki Freeman swung a pass to Tara Vittese, who deposited the ball in the back of net. The Tigers immediately countered with four shots right before halftime, but Carrera halted three of them and another wasn't on target.
Princeton went to work quickly in the second half as Caro peppered Carrera with two shots, but couldn't get one through. The home squad tacked on an insurance tally in the 41st minute as Caleigh Foust tapped in a loose ball.
Head coach Carla Tagline's team looked to have gotten a goal back just a minute later as McCarthy had a clear stab at the net, but Emily Faught stopped the ball from going over the goal line. Undaunted, McCarthy fired another shot, but Carrera kept Princeton scoreless. Virginia's defense showed toughness in the circle, blocking two tries in the 50th minute. Five minutes later, with two corners, Princeton was again held off the board despite four attempts.
After a Princeton timeout, Carrera made her 13th save on sophomore Jane Donio-Enscoe's crack at the goal off a corner. The Virginia goalie would make one more save, finishing with 14 in the contest, helping the ACC foe to its fourth win of the season.
Princeton drops to 3-2 on the season and will welcome No. 7 Maryland to Bedford Field on Tuesday at 6 p.m. That game will be streamed on Facebook Live, powered by the Ivy League Digital Network.
