Maggie O'Connell Claims Ivy Rookie Of The Week After Earning Rutgers Tournament MVP Honors
September 20, 2016 | Women's Volleyball
For the second time over the first three weeks of the season, the Ivy League Rookie of the Week honor has gone to Princeton.
Two weeks after classmate Devon Peterkin picked up the honor following the San Francisco Invitational, Tiger freshman Maggie O'Connell earned the latest Rookie of the Week honor after her MVP performance at the Rutgers Tournament. O'Connell averaged 3.0 kills per set and hit .433 over the weekend in wins over Seattle, Rutgers and Seton Hall.
"Maggie's consistency over the weekend was so impressive, and really helped us win those matches," said head coach Sabrina King. "She came in as a middle, but we've moved her around to make our team better, and she has done everything we've asked of her. I'm really excited to see how her game continues to grow throughout the year."
O'Connell had 12 kills apiece in wins over Seattle and Seton Hall, and she added nine kills and two digs in the win over Rutgers. She hit .579 in the tournament opener over Seattle, and she helped clinch the title with a .346 performance in the comeback victory over the Pirates.
O'Connell has helped Princeton become the most efficient offensive team in the Ivy League; the Tigers are currently hitting .245, and they have three of the most efficient individual hitters in the league: Nnenna Ibe (2nd, .381); Brittany Ptak (4th, .361); and O'Connell (5th, .336).
After a 6-3 performance in non-league play, the reigning Ivy champions will head into league play this weekend with a 7 pm showdown against Penn Saturday night at the Palestra. Check back later this week for a full preview of the matchup, with a focus on the 2015 Ivy League Player of the Year, Cara Mattaliano.
