September 26, 2016 | Men's Water Polo
PRINCETON, N.J. – The No. 11 Princeton men's water polo team will open up Northeast Water Polo Conference (NWPC) play vs. Saint Francis-Brooklyn on Wednesday night (7:30 p.m.) at DeNunzio Pool.
In the summer, the Collegiate Water Polo Association (CWPA) broke off into two separate conferences. Princeton is a part of the Northeast Water Polo Conference with the CWPA still serving as the governing body. For more information on the conference split, read the CWPA's release here.
The Tigers will host the seven straight contests at home including five vs. NWPC opponents. The Tigers' next opponent, Saint Francis, is 4-6 on the season, scoring wins vs. Mercyhurst, Washington and Jefferson and Air Force. The Tigers are 11-19 all-time vs. Saint Francis with the Terriers having won eight of the last 11 meetings vs. the Tigers.
Head coach Luis Nicolao's team most recently had a 1-3 trip out west during the Mountain Pacific Invitational. The Tigers dropped a heartbreaking 12-11 decision to No. 6 UC-Santa Barbara in triple overtime on Friday before defeating Whittier, 15-9, and losing to No. 11 UC-Davis, 13-9 on Saturday. Princeton wrapped up the invitational with a 11-10 loss to Air Force.
Princeton has five players with 20 or more goals and another one with 18 tallies. Freshman Sean Duncan and sophomore Matt Payne each 24 goals to lead the Tigers. Duncan also paces the Tigers with 19 drawn ejections. Along with 22 assists, Payne has a team-leading 46 points, one in front of sophomore Ryan Wilson (18 goals, 27 assists). Junior Jordan Colina is having a sparking season as well with 22 goals, 15 assists and 24 swipes. After back-to-back honorable mention All-American seasons, junior Vojislav Mitrovic has continued to be great in goal for the Tigers as he currently has four consecutive games with 10+ saves.
