NWPC Homestand Continues For No. 14 Princeton
September 29, 2016 | Men's Water Polo
PRINCETON, N.J. – Following a 9-8 home victory over St. Francis to begin the Northeast Water Polo Conference (NWPC) play, the men's water polo team will host four more conference teams at DeNunzio Pool this weekend.
In the summer, the Collegiate Water Polo Association (CWPA) broke off into two separate conferences. Princeton is a part of the NWPC with the CWPA still serving as the governing body. For more information on the conference split, read the CWPA's release here.
The Tigers take on Iona on Friday (8 p.m.), No. 15 Brown on Saturday (7 p.m.) and No. 8 Harvard (10 a.m.) and MIT (2 p.m.) to wrap up the weekend on Sunday. All games will be on the Ivy League Digital Network. Princeton has never lost to Iona and MIT in program history, winning a combined 33 times. While Brown won the last meeting in 2014 against the Tigers, Princeton was victorious in the prior three matchups vs. its Ivy League foe and is 18-9 all-time against Brown. Harvard has not won against Princeton since 2001.
Fresh off meeting his idol, Bruce Springsteen, head coach Luis Nicolao has his team at 8-5 overall in 2016. Before the St. Francis match, sophomore Matt Payne (Player), Sean Duncan (Freshman) and junior Vojislav Mitrovic (Defender) won NWPC weekly honors. Mitrovic followed his accolade with a program-tying 20 saves in the Tigers' 9-8 win.
Before yesterday, the men's water polo team had a 1-3 trip out west during the Mountain Pacific Invitational. Princeton dropped a heartbreaking 12-11 decision to No. 6 UC-Santa Barbara in triple overtime on Friday before defeating Whittier, 15-9 and losing to No. 11 UC-Davis, 13-9 on Saturday. The Tigers wrapped up the invitational with a 11-10 loss to Air Force.
The Tigers have five players that have scored at least 20 goals and have one more player with 18 tallies. Payne's 27 goals and 49 points lead the team. Junior Jordan Colina and sophomore Ryan Wilson each have at least 10 goals, 10 assists, 10 steals and 10 drawn ejections. Colina has a team-high 25 steals and has dished out 17 assist and drawn 10 ejections. Wilson boasts a team-best 27 assists, has swiped 17 passes and drawn 16 ejections. Mitrovic has at least 10 saves in nine of his 10 games.
