No. 11 Men's Water Polo Runs Past Salem International, 25-8
September 04, 2016 | Men's Water Polo
ANNAPOLIS, Md. – The No. 11 Princeton water polo team ended the Navy Open by scoring the second most goals in a game in program history in a 25-8 victory over Salem International on Sunday morning.
The Tigers' 25 goals are one shy of the program mark that was set on Sept. 25, 1999, coincidentally, also against Salem International (then Salem-Teikyo). 13 different Tigers scored in today's contest including sophomore Michael Swart, who set a career high, with five tallies. Junior Jordan Colina and sophomore Matt Payne also posted hat tricks while five other players dropped in multi-goal outings.
Princeton scored the first six goals and eight of the first nine to lead 8-4 after one period. In a dominating performance, the water polo team pitched a shutout in the second stanza and held Salem International without a goal for over 10 minutes. In that span, the Tigers went on a 10-0 run to take 18-4 lead and never looked back.
Head coach Luis Nicolao's team will host the Princeton Invitational at DeNunzio Pool next week (Sept. 8-11). The Tigers begin the tournament vs. Wagner on Thursday at 6:30 p.m.
