#15 Stanford Rallies Past Wrestling Team In New York City

Despite getting an early lead thanks to a pair of nationally ranked upsets, the Princeton wrestling team fell 22-12 to the 15th-ranked Stanford Cardinal Saturday afternoon at the New York Athletic Club.
Princeton earned wins over three nationally ranked wrestlers to open the match, but a wild scramble that ended in a Stanford fall ignited a 16-0 run that ended the match for the unbeaten Cardinal.
The Tigers got the ideal start, as 12th-ranked Brett Harner scored on takedowns in the first and third periods to post a 5-3 win over 20th-ranked Josh Marchok. It was Harner's second straight win over ranked wrestlers, a sign that the 2016 All-American is finding his form as he draws closer to the most important months of the season.
Senior Ray O'Donnell was a 2016 NCAA Championships qualifier as well, and he picked up the biggest win of his season with a 3-1 victory over 10th-ranked Nathan Butler in sudden victory. After both scored on escapes, O'Donnell fought off a takedown situation to force overtime, then wrapped up Butler from behind and took him down for the 3-1 win.
Freshman Ty Agaisse built on that momentum with a 3-2 win over 14th-ranked Gabriel Townsell at 125. Agaisse scored the only takedown of the match late in the first period, and he did a brilliant job of fending off Townsell in the final minute to secure the win.
Stanford got a win at 133, which set up the highlight match of the day, a showdown of former Blair Academy teammates Joey McKenna (ranked third) and Matthew Kolodzik (ranked fourth). The elder statesman had the edge from the start, as he scored an early takedown and rode Kolodzik for more than two minutes to gain a 2-0 lead. He added a full ride in the third to secure the 4-0 win.
Senior Jordan Laster, currently ranked 17th at 149, looked strong in a 9-2 win over Tommy Pawelski. He grabbed the edge with an early takedown, but then built on it with a dominating final period. He fell just short of a major decision, but his victory opened a 12-6 lead for the upset-seeking Tigers.
Unfortunately, the match turned midway through the second period of the ensuing match. Paul Fox and Mike D'Angelo were locked in a low-scoring match when Fox caught D'Angelo on his back in a scramble. That fall, combined with a major for 18th-ranked Keaton Subjeck at 165, gave the Cardinal a 16-12 lead with two matches remaining.
Stanford clinched the win with a 5-3 upset for Peter Galli over 16th-ranked Jonathan Schleifer at 174. The two provided late fireworks — Galli with a takedown, Schleifer with the reversal — just to force overtime, and then Galli got the edge in a scramble and was awarded the takedown, though Tiger head coach Chris Ayres disputed it because he believed Schleifer had control of the ankle. Following a video review, the call stood, and Stanford clinched the win.
Princeton is now off through finals, but will return to the mat Feb. 4 for home Ivy League duals against both Brown (1 pm) and Harvard (5 pm). Both will be on the Ivy League Digital Network.
