Cornell Pulls Off Home Upset, Sends Tigers Into Three-Way Tie For Ivy Lead
October 13, 2017 | Women's Volleyball
The Cornell women's volleyball team, following two weeks on the road, made a big home statement Friday night by handing the two-time reigning Ivy champion Princeton Tigers their first Ivy loss of the 2017 season. The Big Red, which saw a late lead slip away in the opening set, took the final three for a 3-1 home win.
That victory, combined with wins by both Harvard and Yale, leaves Princeton tied with those two teams atop the Ivy standings. Should the Tigers win tomorrow at Columbia (5 pm, Ivy League Network), they would be assured a first-place tie with one of those opponents at the midway point of the Ivy season, as the Bulldogs and Crimson meet Saturday in Cambridge.
Sophomore Natasha Skov, the Ivy League leader in both kills and points, led Princeton with 14 kills on the night, while Devon Peterkin added 10. Sophomore Maggie O'Connell had nine kills and 11 digs, while senior co-captain Maddie Huber had 27 digs (one short of a career high) in the loss. Sophomore Jessie Harris had a double-double with 46 assists and 11 digs, while the middle duo of Caroline Sklaver and Nnenna Ibe combined for 12 kills and five blocks.
One highlight for Princeton came from freshman Alexa Underwood, who dealt with preseason injuries and has recently found her way into the rotation. She posted a five-kill, 17-dig night for the Tigers, with both numbers representing career bests.
