PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The No. 12 Princeton Tigers won a thrilling 14-13 double-overtime contest over the No. 15 Brown Bears at Coleman Aquatics Center on Sunday morning.
After both teams scored once in the first overtime, Sean Duncan recorded the game-winner 18 seconds into the sudden-death second overtime to give Princeton its 19th win of the season.
It was a fast-paced first quarter that featured seven combined tallies with no team leading by more than a goal. Jordan Colina's tally with 1:03 to go in the frame put the Tigers in front, 4-3. It was another offensive quarter as the two teams exchanged rallies in the second stanza before Brown went on a three-goal spurt to end the quarter and go in front, 7-5, at halftime.
This time it was Princeton to go on a run as it scored the first three goals of the second half to jump ahead, 8-7, with four minutes to go. The Bears responded with a tally, but Matt Payne put the Tigers back in front with 2:05 left. Payne completed his hat trick by adding on to the Tigers' advantage (10-8) as the clock ticked under a minute.
The NWPC matchup thriller continued as the Bears dropped in three consecutive goals, taking a 11-10 lead with 4:18 to go in the game. Princeton charged on as Duncan retied the contest at 11-all as he threw in the equalizer two minutes before the buzzer. Neither team could find the game-winner in regulation, sending the meeting into overtime.
In the first half of overtime, Brown scored first as Tommy Bush ripped one in the net with 20 seconds remaining, but Colina countered with another goal with 2:15 left in the second half of overtime. After another Bear goal, Colina sent the game into sudden-death as he scored with just 12 seconds to go.
Princeton will wrap up the regular season with two home games at DeNunzio Pool next week. First up will be the Iona Gaels on Wednesday (Nov. 1). The contest will begin at 7 p.m. and be streamed on the Ivy League Network.
