October 31, 2017 | Men's Water Polo
PRINCETON, N.J. – The No. 12 Princeton Tigers welcome the Iona Gaels to DeNunzio Pool on Wednesday evening (7 p.m.) as the Tigers continue to push for seeding in the upcoming Northeast Water Polo Conference (NWPC) tournament.
Princeton is currently 19-5 overall and 6-2 in the NWPC while Iona is 7-19 this year and 1-9 in conference action. The Tigers are currently tied for second in the conference with Harvard (6-2) while St. Francis-Brooklyn sits at the top (8-1). Princeton has split with Harvard this year and dropped a close decision to St. Francis-Brooklyn. The Terries come to DeNunzio Pool on Saturday (6 p.m.).
Earlier this month, the Tigers earned a 12-6 victory over the Gaels. After each team scored twice in the first quarter, Princeton rushed out with three straight tallies to begin the second frame. The Tigers' defense was strong as they held the Gaels without a goal for 7:41 of game action, stretching between the second and third stanzas. Leading by three, the Tigers registered five goals in the final eight minutes, taking home the win.
The Tigers have high-powered offense that averages over 12.5 goals per contest. Three players have over 50 goals with Jordan Colina's 59 tallies leading the way. Colina has 215 goals in his career and is one of only six players in program history to surpass 200 goals. After scoring 49 times last year, Sean Duncan is only two shy of 60 goals in 2017. Matt Payne has 55 goals this year while Michael Swart has added 42.
Ryan Wilson has already set the single-season record with 75 assists this year and has the career record for assists with 161. Head coach Luis Nicolao is also one shy of 400 career wins with the men's water polo team.
After the regular season comes to an end on Saturday, the Tigers will take part in the NWPC Championship, hosted by Harvard, from Nov. 17-19. The Tigers fell in the conference semifinals to Harvard and earned a third-place finish in the first year of the tournament in 2016.
