Nnenna Ibe Claims First Ivy Player Of The Week Honor Following Career Effort, Weekend Sweep
October 09, 2017 | Women's Volleyball
Junior middle Nnenna Ibe is the only Princeton player who has been a full-time starter through both the 2015 and 2016 Ivy League championship seasons, so she has experienced plenty during her already impressive Tiger career. Of course, that doesn't mean she can't reach new horizons — like she did over the last 72 hours.
Ibe had the most dominant effort of her career Friday night in a 3-1 comeback win over Dartmouth, and she followed it up with another impressive showing in a 3-0 sweep of Harvard that left Princeton alone atop the Ivy standings. Her efforts earned her the Ivy League Player of the Week award, the first of her Princeton career.
Ibe powered a career-high 17 kills on only 21 swings against Dartmouth, hit .762 for the night, and added four blocks and two digs in a 3-1 win over the Big Green; she added six kills and five blocks Saturday night against the Crimson. She hit .600 for the weekend, and she moved to the top of the Ivy statistical rankings this season with a .416 attack percentage. Ibe also moved into the Ivy top five in blocks with 1.09 per set.
"I couldn't be prouder of Nnenna," head coach Sabrina King said. "She has really developed into a stellar player and she continues to grow daily. Her performance this weekend is a culmination of hard work, processing a lot of information, and phenomenal athletic prowess."
Ibe and the first-place Tigers will return to the court for a pair of matches in New York this weekend. The Tigers will open Friday night at Cornell, and then will take on Columbia in New York City Saturday; both matches will be streamed live on the Ivy League Network.
