Princeton Opens Ivy League Season Friday Afternoon In Tri-Meet At Penn
November 15, 2017 | Men's Swimming and Diving
The Princeton men's swimming and diving team will make its 2017-18 Ivy League debut this Friday afternoon when it heads to Sheerr Pool in Philadelphia for a tri-meet against both Cornell and Penn. Diving will open the meet at 1:30 pm, while swimming events start at 3 pm.
Princeton opened its season with a 1-2 mark, with both losses coming last weekend against Top 25 powers Louisville and Virginia. The tri-meet was an ideal way to test the Tigers before Friday's Ivy opener, and the Tigers got several impressive performances throughout their roster. Senior Corey Okubo, a two-year qualifier to the NCAA Championships, had a trio of Top-5 finishes in Virginia, including a fourth in the 200 IM (1:50.00). Classmate Alex Lewis, a member of Princeton's most recent All-America relay (200 free, 2016), also went Top 5 in the back in 49.85.
One of the most impressive performers last weekend was freshman diver Colten Young, who had back-to-back runner-up finishes in both the 3-meter (327.20) and 1-meter (311.10) events. His 1-meter finish was only .5 behind the winning score posted by Louisville's Daniel Fecteau.
Princeton won its 2017-18 opener to cap its Florida trip with a 150-117 victory over Nova Southeastern; senior Ben Schafer, junior Cole Buese and freshman Corey Lau were all double-winners for the Tigers in that meet.
This will be Princeton's first meet at Sheerr Pool since 2013, and that one turned out to be a tightly contested 160-130 win over the Quakers. The 2017-18 Penn squad enters the weekend with a 1-1 mark, including a win in its Sheerr Pool opener against Villanova, while Cornell is 1-2, which included an Ivy split against Harvard (loss, 202-93) and Dartmouth (win, 199-101).
