Véronneau Has Three-Point Night as Tigers Top Yale, 5-4
November 17, 2017 | Men's Ice Hockey
The final horn sounded, and "Celebration" by Kool and the Gang blared over the Hobey Baker Rink sound system. Only there was no celebration, just a home team that won and then acted like it expected to the entire time.
And that speaks volumes about how much progress the Princeton men's hockey team has made in about 12 months.
Max Véronneau scored two goals and added an assist for a three-point night as Princeton defeated Yale 5-4 on Friday night. The Tigers led 5-2 midway through the third period and then withstood a furious Yale rally, with the win not secured until freshman goalie Ryan Ferland swept aside the final attempt of the night as time expired.
The win moved the Tigers to 3-2-1 overall and 2-2-1 in the ECAC heading into Saturday night's home game against Brown. Yale is now 3-4-0 overall and in the league.
Princeton is also 18-12-3 in its last 33 games dating back to last year, when the Tigers started 0-6-1. Along the way Princeton has shown it can score goals and win games, and both showed in how Princeton played against the Bulldogs.
Princeton never trailed, with leads of 1-0 (goal by Jackson Cressey) and 2-1 (Véronneau's first) before it became a 2-2 game at intermission. Princeton then got second period goals from Véronneau and Reid Yochim and then Liam Grande 3:51 into the third to build the lead to three goals.
Yale didn't quit, though, and the Bulldogs would eventually get within one with 5:04 to play. From that point to the end, Ferland would make six of his 37 saves for the night, not allowing Yale to get the equalizer.
