Women's Squash Team Sweeps Franklin & Marshall In Opener, Prepares For Top-5 Showdown Sunday
November 18, 2017 | Women's Squash
A trio of freshmen made successful debuts and the Tiger women won all 27 individual games during a decisive 9-0 sweep of Franklin & Marshall in the 2017-18 season opener for the Princeton women's squash team.
Raneem El Torky (2), Emme Leonard (5), and Mia Rosini (9) were the newest Tigers to score victories in their collegiate debuts, and each did so in impressive fashion. None of the three lost more than eight points in their entire match, and Rosini dropped only four points in her 3-0 win over Julia Bevan.
Two other underclassmen got off to strong starts, as sophomores Morgan Steelman (4) and Madison Soukup (7) both earned wins. Three-time All-American Olivia Fiechter got her senior season off with a strong 11-4, 12-10, 11-6 win over Sherilyn Yang at the No. 1 spot, while both Samantha Chai and Kate Feeley were also winners for the Tigers.
Fourth-ranked Princeton will head to Washington, D.C., for a doubleheader Sunday, which opens at 11 am with a top-five showdown against No. 5 Stanford. Following that match, the Tigers will face host George Washington at 2 pm.

PRINCETON QUOTES
Isabel Hirshberg: Today was an exciting opening match to start off the season. Our freshmen, Raneem, Emme, and Mia, have been waiting to debut what they have been working on in the preseason and played with impressive confidence. The returners were excited to get back on court and we decisively reaffirmed our skills. With a 9-0 overall score and dominant 3-0 matches, we were able to gain the assurance and energy needed for the rest of the weekend. We will use the momentum we gained today to move into our match tomorrow morning against #5 Stanford.
Olivia Fiechter: The first match of the season can always be tough, especially for freshmen, with both energy and nerves a bit higher than usual, but everyone handled it like a pro and delivered really strong performances today. Last year, I? had to sit out for the first chunk of the season due to a back injury, so to simply be healthy, out there playing, and able to contribute to the team's win was really exciting. We've been working so hard all fall and I? think that after today's strong performance, everyone should be bringing a lot of confidence into our matches against Stanford and GW tomorrow.
Madison Soukup: We played a great match today against F&M, which marked the start of the official squash season. Right from the warmup, our positive energy and the excitement to be on court was evident. Everyone adjusted to F&M's courts with ease, which allowed the team to establish really great length from the start. We dominated the court by staying focused and aggressive, leading us to a 9-0 win overall. During my match against F&M's number 7, Liana Zranchev, I felt very loose and ready to play. I was moving well around the court and attacking the front every chance I could. As we all sit on the bus heading to D.C., for our next two matches against GW and Stanford, I feel confident in the training we have done to prepare both mentally and physically for the rest of this weekend.
Morgan Steelman: We went into today's match with strong focus, and we all feel like we played really well. Now we have good momentum going into our match against Stanford tomorrow!
