Ivy Champs Return To NCAAs, Will Face #14 Iowa State In Ames Friday
November 26, 2017 | Women's Volleyball
After one of the wildest finishes in the history of Ivy League volleyball, the three-time defending league champion Princeton Tigers (18-7) will return to the NCAA Championships this Friday, Dec. 1, when they face #13 Iowa State in Ames, Iowa, at 8 pm ET (7 pm local).
Iowa State (21-6) will be the host of a four-team field, which will include Wisconsin (20-9) and Marquette (22-9). Those teams will open competition at 5 pm ET, with the winner set to face the winner of the Princeton-Iowa State match the next day.
"We are so excited to represent Princeton and the Ivy League this week, and getting to play a great team like Iowa State will be a thrill for us," said head coach Sabrina King, who has played a role in the last eight Ivy League championships for Princeton, including the last three as head coach. "We competed well at BYU last year and grew a lot as a team, and I know we'll head to Ames ready to play our best volleyball."
Princeton has played in six NCAA tournaments, including last year, when the Tigers traveled to Provo and played two thrilling sets in a 25-22, 25-15, 25-23 loss at 10th-ranked BYU. Five of the seven Princeton starters from that match will be part of the Tiger squad trying to earn the program's first win at the NCAA Championships. In Princeton's six NCAA tournament matches, it has only won one set (first, 2007), though it led BYU after the 20-point mark in two sets last year.
The Tigers will once again bring the Ivy League Player of the Year to the NCAAs, as sophomore Maggie O'Connell became the first Princeton underclassman to claim the honor. The 2016 Ivy League Rookie of the Year was the only player in the league to both rank in the Top 5 in kills and points, and also in the Top 10 in hitting percentage.
O'Connell joins four other All-Ivy League players, including sophomores Jessie Harris and Devon Peterkin, as well as junior middle Nnenna Ibe, all of whom were starters on Princeton's 2016 NCAA tournament team at BYU. Junior middle Caroline Sklaver was also an All-Ivy honoree to cap her first season as a starter.
Princeton made a dramatic run to the NCAA Championships, a destination few thought possible with five matches remaining. The Tigers trailed Yale by two, but won four of their final five in the regular season to secure a tie; Princeton then swept Yale on its home court — including a rally from 17-7 down in the first set — to clinch this sixth trip to the NCAA Championships.
Check back later this week for more information on the Iowa State-bound Princeton Tigers.
