Princeton Has Six Named to All-Region Team
November 27, 2017 | Field Hockey
PRINCETON, N.J. – The Princeton Tigers had six players named to the Mid-Atlantic All-Region teams, the National Field Hockey Coaches' Association announced today.
Â
Princeton's six honorees were tied for the third most in the country behind UConn (eight) and Penn State (seven). Maddie Bacskai, Ryan McCarthy and Julianna Tornetta were named to the first team All-Mid-Atlantic Region while MaryKate Neff, Clara Roth and Elise Wong were second team selections.
Â
McCarthy had 17 goals and 37 points in 2017, which put her in the top 30 nationally in both categories, leading to her being selected as the 2017 Ivy Offensive Player of the Year. After scoring 12 goals in her first two seasons at Princeton, McCarthy registered 31 tallies in her final two campaigns. She sits in the program's top-10 in career points (100), combined goals and assists (57) and goals (43). McCarthy is now a four-time All-Ivy and two-time first team all-region player.
Â
With one of the top defenses in the country, Princeton boasts many key contributors on a team that is 18th nationally in shutouts per game (0.26) and 18th in goals-against-average (1.50). Bacskai and Wong were vital pieces for the 2017 Ivy League Champions.
Â
Princeton earned five shutouts this season, Dartmouth, then-No. 24 Boston University, Columbia, Northeastern and then-No. 15 Harvard. Perhaps the team's best defensive performance of the season came against Harvard. Prior to the contest, the Crimson came in as the highest scoring offense in the Ivy League and the fifth best in the NCAA. The Crimson finished with just four shots on goal. The Tigers also pitched a shutout streak of over 248 minutes during the season.
Â
Bacskai has added four goals, while Wong has scored twice this year for the Tigers. This is the second time that Bacskai has been All-Region, her first on the first team, while Wong is a three-time all-region player.
Â
Julianna Tornetta, the 2017 Ivy League Co-Rookie of the Year, finished second on the team with 23 points (five goals, 13 assists). Tornetta's .68 assists per game were 11th in the country and led the Ivy League. Her 1.21 points per game were 10th in the conference. The freshman had two multi-goal games and four multi-assist performances including a season-best three helpers vs. Cornell (Oct. 28). Her signature contest was a two-goal, two-assist day at Brown (Oct. 14).
Â
Neff finished second on Princeton with eight goals. She began the season with a defensive save vs. then-No. 1 North Carolina (Sept. 1) and broke out offensively with three points vs. then-No. 22 Rutgers (Sept. 8). The first-multi-goal outing of her career came vs. Columbia (Oct. 14). She finished the regular season with a goal in seven meetings and was fourth on the team with 19 points.
Â
Roth finished 2017 with points in seven of her final eight games, collecting 18 points during that span. She has six goals and 12 assists, good for 24 points overall for Princeton. Her first collegiate goal came against the 2016 national champion, Delaware (Sept. 3), before back-to-back contests with a tally at then-No. 10 Maryland (Sept. 19) and at Dartmouth (Sept. 23). Roth's first multi-goal game at Brown (Oct. 14) where she also added two assists.
Â
The Longstreth/NFHCA Division I Regional Players of the Year will be announced on Tuesday (Nov. 28), with the All-America squad coming out on Dec. 5 and the National Player of the Year on Dec. 14.
