The Princeton women's track & field team started their season off with a bang this Friday evening in Staten Island, N.Y., at the FastTrack Season Opener at Ocean Breeze Park.
The Tigers dominated the women's mile event with first, second and fourth place finishes. Junior Marie-Fee Breyer got the silver with a 5:08.12 finish and junior Mim Buscher nabbed fourth at 5:16.91. Jurew's victorious performance in the mile didn't slow her down at all for her next effort in the open 400m race, where she placed first once again with a 58.62 finish.
Sophomore Madeleine Sumner, who went to NCAA outdoor regionals last spring for the 1500m, ran a 2:15.43 800m and grabbed the Tigers another first place finish.
Orange and Black also proved its depth in the in the 1000m race. Junior Jackie Berardo came in first for the Tigers with a 2:56.36 finish, sophomore Erin Endres ended in fourth at 3:00.88, and seniors Ashley Forte and Melana Hammel were in sixth and ninth at 3:01.94 and 3:05.51.
Two Tigers made it to the finals of the 60m dash out of 38 people. Senior Christina Walter clutched third place at 7.81 and just .02 seconds behind her was freshman Katie Difrancesco at 7.83.
Senior Maia Craver made it to the finals of the 60m hurdles and finished in 5th with a time of 8.91. Craver also ran with teammate Ashley Willingham in the 200m dash, placing seventh with a 26.03 finish behind Willingham in second with a time of 25.63.
In the center of the track, senior Kennedy O'Dell placed first for the shotput with a throw of 14.09m—just .05 behind her personal best. Sophomore Ellen Scott-Young was also just shy of her 15.58 PR from last season in the weight throw, throwing 15.46 tonight and placing second. She's proud of how she competed and feels like "she's on track for a good season" to come.
Tonight's meet gave the mid-distance girls and sprinters a great opportunity to get "their track wheels spinning" according head coach Michelle Eisenreich. "We used this meet to gauge where the team is at and provide a competitive opportunity at the end of fall training; for the middle-distance athletes, it was a great opportunity to get them focused on track," head coach Michelle Eisenreich said. "We were really happy to see a few student-athletes step up and win races - in the mile, 800 and the two throwing events as well. Between now and when we come back from break in January we will be working hard and sharpening up for the heart of our competitive season."
The Tigers will next compete at home in the New Year Invitational on Dec. 9th.
