Top-Ranked Ohio State Tops Princeton In Delaware Showdown
December 15, 2017 | Wrestling
The top-ranked Ohio State Buckeyes sent out seven wrestlers ranked in the top six of their respective weight classes and showed the crowd at the Carpenter Center at the University of Delaware just how powerful the top-ranked team in the nation could be. A comeback win in the first match set the tone for the Buckeyes, who never let Princeton get any sort of momentum in a 39-0 victory over the Tigers Friday night during a lead-in match to the 2017 Beast of the East.
Ohio State, which didn't even have two-time reigning NCAA champion Kyle Snyder in the lineup, improved to 5-0 in the win, while Princeton fell to 0-3 with the loss. The Tigers have taken on a trio of Top-10 teams this month, but this was the only match they couldn't quite work their way into by the midway point.
One of the two unranked wrestlers for Ohio State earned some early energy for his side, as Braken Mead rallied with a late takedown and two nearfall points to rally past Princeton sophomore Matteo DeVincenzo at 125. The Buckeyes sent four top-six wrestlers in a row after that, and they took care of business. The highlight came at 149, where fifth-ranked Ke-shawn Hayes used a second-period ride and a third-period escape to hold off seventh-ranked Matthew Kolodzik in a 2-0 win.
Ohio State controlled the second half of the team dual, getting bonus points in four of five wins, to finish the win. Princeton won't wrestle another dual until 2018, but that doesn't mean it won't see some of the best competition in the country. The Tigers will head to Chicago Dec. 29-30 for the Midlands Championships.
