Bacskai and McCarthy Earn All-America Accolades
December 05, 2017 | Field Hockey
PRINCETON, N.J. – Sophomore Maddie Bacskai (first team) and senior Ryan McCarthy (second team) were selected to the Longstreth/National Field Hockey Coaches' Association Division I All America teams.
"This is a great honor for Maddie and Ryan and well deserved," said head coach Carla Tagliente. "Both have had fantastic seasons and have been leaders in their respective positions. Ryan has capped off a tremendous career with her most productive season to date. She was a leader up front and on set pieces for us this year. Maddie has emerged as one of the top defenders in the country and has been the anchor in the back for us. I am excited to see how she develops over the next two years and into the future."
Bacskai was an imperative member of the Tigers' backline in 2017. Princeton was 18th nationally in shutouts per game (0.26) and 18th in goals-against-average (1.50). This is the sophomore's first All-America accolade, adding four goals for the Ivy League Champions.
Â
Princeton earned five shutouts this season, Dartmouth, then-No. 24 Boston University, Columbia, Northeastern and then-No. 15 Harvard. Perhaps the team's best defensive performance of the season came against Harvard. Prior to the contest, the Crimson came in as the highest scoring offense in the Ivy League and the fifth best in the NCAA. The Crimson finished with just four shots on goal. The Tigers also pitched a shutout streak of over 248 minutes during the season.
Â
McCarthy had 17 goals and 37 points in 2017, which put her in the top 30 nationally in both categories, leading to her being selected as the 2017 Ivy Offensive Player of the Year. After scoring 12 goals in her first two seasons at Princeton, McCarthy registered 31 tallies in her final two campaigns. She sits in the program's top-10 in career points (100), combined goals and assists (57) and goals (43). This is her first All-America honor.
