Cannady Moves Up 3s List as Tigers Fall at GW

Junior Devin Cannady continued his climb up the Princeton career 3-pointers list Wednesday night in the nation's capital, but the Princeton men's basketball team fell at George Washington, 71-60.
Cannady made three 3s to stand with 167 in his career, moving him past Dan Mavraides '11 (166) and into sixth place in Princeton history. All five above him have more than 200 3-pointers, with former teammate Spencer Weisz '17 in fifth at 209.
Princeton had an early 9-0 run to turn a 3-0 deficit into a 9-3 lead less than five minutes into the game, but the Colonials stopped the Tigers there and caught Princeton at 13-13. GW led by as many as seven in the first half before Cannady drilled a 3-pointer as the final seconds ticked away to pull within three at the break, 31-28.
"We moved the ball well. We defended," Cannady said of the strong start. "We stuck to the game plan, and then they started hitting shots and we didn't move as well."
The Tigers were up one, 34-33, on a Cannady 3 less than three minutes after halftime, but after Cannady hit another 3 to cut the Colonials' lead to 42-41 with 13-plus minutes to go, GW went on a 7-0 run of nearly two minutes to expand the lead to eight at 49-41. From there, GW kept Princeton no closer than six points the rest of the way.
Princeton outshot George Washington 49 percent to 45.5 percent from the floor and was better than half from 3, going 9 of 16 (.563) to 5 of 18 (.278) for the Colonials, but GW got to the stripe more than four times as often as Princeton, going 16 of 22 (.727) to 3 of 5 (.600) for the Tigers. GW added to that with a 37-23 rebounding edge, including 18 offensive boards that led to a 17-7 advantage in second-chance points.
Cannady led Princeton with 23 points for his fourth 20-point game of the season and 10th of his career.
Princeton will have its longest break of the season to date before hosting Monmouth Tuesday at 7 p.m. in Jadwin Gym.
"We have to look at the positive and move forward and get a win at home, defend home court," Cannady said.
