Princeton Edges Out Cornell, 58-54
February 10, 2017 | Women's Basketball
ITHACA, N.Y. – Freshman Bella Alarie's 21 points guided the Princeton Tigers to a 58-54 victory over the Cornell Big Red on Friday evening at the Newman Arena.
Â
It's Alarie fourth 20+ point game of the season and her seventh straight contest in double figures. Sophomore Gabrielle Rush had 13 points off the bench while junior Leslie Robinson just missed a double-double with nine points and 12 rebounds in the win.
Â
Knotted at four-all, Alarie made a sparkling play as she went coast-to-coast for a fast-break layup and was fouled. She completed the three-point play to put the Tigers in front, 7-4.
Â
Cornell's offense began the second stanza on fire as it ran off 11-of-13 points to take it its largest advantage of the half, 29-18, with 4:19 left. This time, the Tigers answered with a rally as Alarie and Rush combined for seven of the team's next nine to cut the deficit to two (29-27) as the clock ticked near 90 seconds to go. Cornell kept Princeton at bay, tallying six points to end the frame, leading 35-27 at intermission. Alarie recorded13 points on 5-of-7 shooting (71.4 percent) in the first 20 minutes of game action.
Â
In the second half, head coach Courtney Banghart's team registered the first 14 points, taking a six-point advantage (41-35), highlighted by Rush's five points during that stretch. Princeton also held Cornell without a point for the first 7:41 of the quarter. A three-pointer from Cornell's Megan LeDuc got the home unit with two, but Princeton took a 43-39 lead into the final frame. The Tigers held the Big Red to one basket in the third stanza and caused six turnovers.
Â
Down by five as the clock struck 3:18 to go in the game, LeDuc sank another trey setting the score at 51-49 Princeton. On the very next possession, senior Taylor Brown responded with a three-pointer of her own on a great feed from Alarie off an offensive rebound.
Â
LeDuc led the Big Red with 20 points while Nia Marshall had 14 points and nine rebounds in the loss. The Tigers blocked nine shots and stole seven passes. Princeton won its 17th consecutive game vs. Cornell.
Â
The Tigers are now over the .500 mark at 10-9 overall and 4-2 in the Ivy League. Cornell drops to 12-8 this season and 3-4 in the conference. Banghart's unit will travel to New York to take on Columbia tomorrow. Tip-off is scheduled for 6 p.m.
