Princeton Climbs Into Top 10 of CWPA Varsity Poll
February 15, 2017 | Women's Water Polo
PRINCETON, N.J. - Following a 3-0 weekend at the Bison Invitational, the Princeton Tigers jumped one spot to No. 10 in the Collegiate Water Polo Association (CWPA) Varsity Poll.
Head coach Luis Nicolao's squad is now 6-0 on the young season and is off to its best start since 2014. The Tigers used strong defense over the weekend, allowing just 11 goals as they took down Claremont Mudd Scripps, St. Francis-Brooklyn and George Washington. Princeton has also scored at least 12 goals in every game this season.
Chelsea Johnson has been the team's leading scorer as she has posted 15 goals and 22 points this season. All but one shot that she has taken as gone into the back of the net. Three other players have contributed 10+ goals in Morgan Hallock, Haley Wan and Amy Castellano. Ashleigh Johnson has been outstanding in her return to Princeton as she has a .759 save percentage in five games started.
The top five in the Varsity Poll remains the same as Stanford sits as the No. 1 team with USC, UCLA, Calif., and Arizona State following. Michigan is still the top CWPA team in the poll, dropping two spots to No. 8.
Princeton will now take some time off before welcoming No. 21 Harvard to DeNunzio Pool for an ESPNU contest on Feb. 25 (10:30 a.m.).
