Another View of Princeton's Victories Over Yale and Brown

PRINCETON, N.J. – It's up to three straight Ivy League weekend sweeps for the Princeton Tigers as they dropped the Yale Bulldogs (69-47) and Brown Bears (81-75) last Friday and Saturday.

After losing their first two Ivy matchups, Princeton has rattled off seven consecutive victories and sit second in the conference, one game behind the Penn Quakers. For her performance against Yale and Brown, Bella Alarie was selected as the Ivy League Rookie of the Week for the third week in a row and eighth time overall.

Yale's Three-Point Defense: The Bulldogs' three-point defense came into the weekend ranked as the worst unit in the Ivy League. In the first half, Princeton made three shots from beyond the arc on seven attempts while shooting 48.4 percent from the floor. Yale improved its three-point defense in the second half as the Tigers were 2-of-11 from deep, but it wasn't a factor in the final score.

Yale's Struggling Offense: Yale cut its deficit to eight after a trey from Tamara Simpson to open up the fourth quarter. Following that bucket, Princeton answered with the next 12 points, highlighted by a combined nine from Leslie Robinson and Vanessa Smith, to go up, 59-41, with 5:48 to go. Yale would not get closer than 16 the rest of the way. In the fourth frame, the Tigers were 9-of-16 (56.3 percent) while Yale was 2-of-12 (16.7 percent).

Leslie Robinson: The junior scored seven points and registered eight rebounds in just 23 minutes as the Tigers rolled to a 22-point victory over Yale. The next night, Robinson had a team-high 17 points in Princeton's 81-75 win over Brown. The forward has secured at least five rebounds in her last 11 games with six double-figure contests during that span. She sits second in the Ivy League in field goal percentage (51.1) and is averaging 10.0 points and 7.8 rebounds per game.

Justine Gaziano: The Brown freshman had a game-high 24 points vs. Princeton on Saturday, going 6-of-12 shooting (50.0 percent), making four three-pointers and all eight of her free throw attempts. She also added four rebounds and a steal in the loss.

Brown's Offense: In front, 41-39, out of the intermission, Princeton shut down the Ivy League's top offense in the third quarter, holding Brown to four baskets and 11 points. The Bears shot 26.7 percent in that stanza and made only one three-pointer.

Each team was stellar offensively in the fourth quarter, combining to go 21-of-25, but Brown made three more three-pointers, cutting its deficit to two with 1:38 to go. The Bears missed their final three shots while Princeton made four free throws in that time frame to score the win.
