Princeton Career Scoring/Pronunciations
As a senior and a junior college transfer, Hofstra's Josh Byrne will be making his one and only appearance of his career on Sherrerd Field as he leads the Pride into Princeton.
After last year's game, Princeton could be forgiven for never wanting to see Byrne again. All Byrne did in that game was score five goals, including the game-winner off the overtime face-off, to lead Hofstra to an 11-10 win over the Tigers in Hempstead. If that wasn't enough to get Princeton's attention, Byrne had a six-point day, with three goals and three assists, in Hofstra's lone game to date, an 11-9 win over Monmouth last Saturday.
Though Princeton will be playing its third game in eight days to start the season, the Tigers are feeling pretty good about things so far, after a 22-8 win over NJIT last Saturday and then a really strong all-around effort Tuesday night in the 10-6 win over Marist.

This will be the 31st meeting between Princeton and Hofstra, and the Tigers lead the series 16-14. They've played every year since 2000, and Princeton is 12-5 in those games.
Hofstra's win last year snapped a five-game Princeton winning streak in the series.
Princeton and Hofstra first met in 1972 and played four straight years. The series resumed in 1984 and continued until 1993, with the exception of 1992, before resuming in 2000.
*Â Â Â Â *Â Â Â Â *
Princeton has held its first two opponents to single digits in goals (NJIT 8, Marist 6). Princeton has now held three straight opponents to single digits, going back to the Cornell game to end last season.
The last time Princeton had a streak of three straight games of holding its opponents below 10 was in the 2012 season, when the Tigers did it five straights times (with a defense that included goalie Tyler Fiorito and poles Chad Wiedmaier, John Cunningham and Jonathan Meyers).
Princeton did not have consecutive games of holding its opponent below 10 in all of the 2014 and 2015 seasons and hadn't done it in 2016 through the first nine games.
Since then, Princeton has kept five of its last six opponents in single digits.
*Â Â Â Â *Â Â Â Â *
Speaking of streaks, Gavin McBride has a few going.
First, he has at least one point in every game since the start of his sophomore year, a run of 31 straight. Keep in mind, McBride had no goals or assists as a freshman.
McBride also has at least one goal in 11 straight games, and he has scored at least three in seven straight games. The school record for consecutive games with at least three goals in eight, set by Chris Massey in the 1996 season.
*Â Â Â Â *Â Â Â Â *
In the game Tuesday night, Marist scored three goals in the first 9:58 of the game and then three more in the final 50:02.
Tyler Blaisdell made 13 saves in the game, including 11 in the first half. Blaisdell has a 5.33 goals-against average and .692 save percentage through two games, after having a .448 save percentage and 11.75 goals-against average in 2016.
*Â Â Â Â *Â Â Â Â *
The coaching staff isn't really sure what position Chase Williams will ultimately play. That's in football, by the way, where Williams was a linebacker for the Ivy League champs, though his future might be as a defensive back.
Lacrosse? Williams was a walk-on to the team after the football season ended. He solidified his spot on the roster, and then was thrown to the fire against Marist. Shorthanded at the shortstick D middie position, Princeton basically needed Williams and J.T. Caputo to go the whole way against the Red Foxes, and they responded with big-time performances.
With the two SSDMs, Princeton held Marist to six goals, after the Red Foxes had averaged 11.0 in their first two games.
Williams had two caused turnovers and four ground balls and was a key part of the clearing game. Caputo also caused two turnovers and added two ground balls.
*Â Â Â Â *Â Â Â Â *
Hofstra coach Seth Tierney is the nephew of former Princeton head coach Bill Tierney. Seth's son Ryan, a freshman on the Hofstra team, had three goals and an assist in his college debut against Monmouth.
Tierney was named the Colonial Athletic Association Rookie of the Week
*Â Â Â Â *Â Â Â Â *
Zach Currier had another wild stat line in the win over Marist, with three goals, one assist, 11 ground balls and two caused turnovers.
Currier now has 189 career ground balls, leaving him 11 away from the 200 mark for his career.
Is that the school record? No, that belongs to Greg Waller, who had 333 career ground balls before graduating in 1992. It was Waller, by the way, who won the face-off to start the second overtime of the 1992 NCAA final against Syracuse. Andy Moe picked up that ground ball, went in and scored the game-winner to give the Tigers the first of their six NCAA championships.
James Mitchell, a 1997 grad, is second all-time with 284 ground balls.
*Â Â Â Â *Â Â Â Â *
Bear Goldstein has started every game of his career on defense for a total of 43 straight games. Princeton's other two starters on D against Marist, Danny Winschuh and Arman Medghalchi, were making their second and first career starts.
*Â Â Â Â *Â Â Â Â *
Michael Sowers has more assists (eight) and more points (12) after two games of his freshman year than any other Princeton player has ever had.
Sowers has eight assists in two games. Last year Princeton had three players who had more than eight assists for the entire season.
Sowers' eight assists have gone to five different players. Gavin McBride has scored three goals off of assists from Sowers.
*Â Â Â Â *Â Â Â Â *
Princeton won 5 of 19 face-offs against Marist. Hofstra won 6 of 21 face-offs against Monmouth.
*Â Â Â Â *Â Â Â Â *
Princeton was 5 for 5 man up against NJIT and 0 for 5 man up against Marist. Princeton didn't attempt a shot on the final three EMOs, late in the fourth quarter.
*Â Â Â Â *Â Â Â Â *
Princeton has five players who have at least one goal in each of the first two games - Zach Currier, Michael Sowers, Gavin McBride, Dawson McKenzie and Riley Thompson.
Of those five, three are Canadians who played at Culver Military Academy (Currier, McKenzie, Thompson) and the other two (McBride, Sowers) are from suburban Philadelphia.
*Â Â Â Â *Â Â Â Â *
Zach Currier, Gavin McBride and Michael Sowers have combined for 17 goals on 33 shots (.515).
*Â Â Â Â *Â Â Â Â *
Princeton is playing the third of five straight home games to start the season. The only other time Princeton played five straight at home to start a season was in 1982.
