Auburn defeated the Princeton men's tennis team 4-2 to open the Blue Gray National Tennis Classic in Montgomery, Ala., Friday.
In a split match that will finish Saturday at 11 a.m. ET/10 a.m. CT, Princeton will face Texas Tech after the Red Raiders won the doubles point Friday after the Tigers' match with Auburn. Tom Colautti and Payton Holden won their match on court two in the battle for the doubles point against Texas Tech, but the Red Raiders won on the other two courts to get the point
Against Auburn, the southern Tigers took the doubles point before Princeton took a 2-1 lead with wins from Tom Colautti and Kial Kaiser at second and third. Auburn, though, took the next three matches to finish, completing the win.
"Disappointing loss today as we had a lot of momentum and simply didn't capitalize," Princeton coach Billy Pate said. "We simply have to be better at playing with sustained confidence and finishing. We didn't play a very good doubles point and that hurt us as well. Auburn did a good job of hanging around in singles and struck at the right moment. We'll get right back at it and expect a better performance."
Order of finish: Doubles: 2, 3, 1; Singles: 2, 3, 1, 4, 5
