A Saturday split wrapped up the Blue Gray National Tennis Classic Saturday for the Princeton men's tennis team in Montgomery, Ala., as the Tigers fell to Texas Tech before closing out a win against Boise State.
The Red Raiders beat Princeton 4-0, taking the doubles point and winning on courts two, one and four to get to the clinching fourth point. Only five singles matches were able to be played at once, and Texas Tech clinched the win before the match at sixth singles could begin.
Princeton opened the Boise State match with a doubles-point win, with Tom Colautti and Payton Holden winning on court two and Jonathan Carcione and Jimmy Wasserman winning on court three. The Tigers then got wins from Wasserman, Carcione and Kial Kaiser to get to the 4-1 win.
"It was important to finish the tournament on a positive note, and we did a good job of preparing for the Boise match after the short 90-minute turnaround after the Texas Tech match," Princeton coach Billy Pate said. "Though it was an overall somewhat disappointing weekend based on what our goals were prior to the event, this tournament will help us for our upcoming matches. Maybe we didn't adjust to being outdoors as quickly as we had hoped, and for whatever reason, we needed to be more confident and resilient. We were very streaky, yet there were some positive things today. We scheduled very aggressively and 11 matches into the season we have played nothing but good competition. There have been no teams we could simply pencil in as a win beforehand, and that was by design. It will make us stronger and we'll look forward to being at home the next two weekends before our spring break trip."
Princeton will head home for five matches over the next two weekends, hosting Denver, Buffalo and Bryant next Saturday and Sunday in Jadwin Gym.
Order of finish: Doubles: 3, 2, 1; Singles: 2, 1, 4
