Men's Tennis Team Opens Homestand With Win Over Denver
March 04, 2017 | Men's Tennis
The first match of a five-match homestand went to the Princeton men's tennis team Saturday afternoon with a 5-2 win over Denver.
The Tigers will have two more matches this weekend, against Buffalo at 10 a.m. Sunday and Bryant at 3 p.m. Sunday in Jadwin Gym. Admission is free. Matches against NJIT and William & Mary will follow next Saturday.
"We had a touch challenge from Denver today," Princeton coach Billy Pate said. "They played well in singles and pushed us after we won a close doubles point. We needed a complete team effort to be succesful today. Tomorrow will be another tough assignment and we'll need to be at our best."
Princeton (6-6) opened the day with a doubles-point win, with Jonathan Carcione and Jimmy Wasserman starting it off with a win on court three and the nation's 13th-ranked doubles pair, Alex Day and Luke Gamble, answering a Denver (4-6) win on court two with a 7-6(4) win on court one for the point.
Wasserman and Gamble followed with straight-set wins on courts six and four in singles play to put Princeton within one point of clinching, and after Denver picked up matches on courts two and three, Payton Holden, who rallied from a first-set loss, took his final two sets to find the clinching fourth point. Tom Colautti closed the day by rallying from his own first-set loss to make the 5-2 final.
Princeton's indoor home matches will be streamed on the Ivy League Digital Network and live updates are available on the team's twitter feed @PtonMensTennis.
Order of finish: Doubles: 3, 2, 1; Singles: 6, 4, 2, 3, 5, 1
