Tennis Teams to Head to California for Spring Break
March 17, 2017 | Men's Tennis, Women's Tennis
Three matches apiece are on the docket for the Princeton men's and women's tennis teams as each heads to Southern California for spring break.
The men (10-6) will head to Pepperdine Tuesday (5 p.m. ET, live stats), San Diego Thursday (2 p.m. ET) and UC Santa Barbara Sunday (12 p.m. ET). The women (6-6) will go to Cal State Northridge Monday (2 p.m. ET), San Diego Thursday (5 p.m. ET) and San Diego State Friday (5 p.m. ET).
The men, who count Alex Day and Luke Gamble as the nation's 24th-ranked doubles pair, are coming off a sweep of a five-match homestand over the last two weekends and are on a six-match winning streak. Pepperdine (4-7) will be looking for its first dual-match win since defeating San Diego State 6-1 on Mar. 2, and the Waves have since played in the Pacific Coast Doubles Championship in San Diego before hosting Oklahoma and TCU. USD, which counts the 55th-ranked singles player in the country in Filip Vittek along with former Princeton assistant Ryan Keckley as head coach, is 7-4 heading into Friday's match against Tulane in the Toreros' weekend tournament. USD will also host Wisconsin Wednesday before hosting Princeton Thursday. UCSB, ranked 50th in the nation, is 8-5 and will be playing its first match since March 15 when it hosts Princeton 11 days later. The Gauchos have the nation's sixth-ranked doubles team in Simon Freund and Morgan Mays. New team and individual rankings will be out Tuesday.
The women, who have Caroline Joyce and Nicole Kalhorn ranked as the nation's No. 72 doubles pair, will first face a CSUN team that stands at 6-7 before a Saturday visit from Texas State. The Matadors have Elisa Elhadj ranked 101st ahead of Tuesday's new rankings. USD is 5-7 before hosting another Ivy foe, Dartmouth, Saturday, and SDSU, which will host Dartmouth Sunday and fell 4-3 to Yale this past Tuesday, is 5-11 heading into the visit from the Big Green.
The matches will be the last for both Tiger teams before Ivy League play begins. The Princeton men will have a split weekend at Cornell, Friday, April 7, and home against Columbia, Sunday, April 9. The women will go to Penn to open league play Saturday, April 1.
