Strong Performance From Gross Not Enough As Maryland Scores 2-0 Victory
March 19, 2017 | Baseball
COLLEGE PARK, Md. – Despite a strong performance from junior starting pitcher Ben Gross, the Princeton Tigers fell to the Maryland Terrapins, 2-0, at Bob "Turtle" Smith Stadium on Sunday afternoon.
Gross struck out six hitters in five innings of work, allowing just one earned run. For the season, the junior has 20 strikeouts in 16 innings with a 1.13 ERA. Ryan Smith and Bryce Keller threw three scoreless frames in relief, punching out three.
Maryland's Madison Nickens' home run provided the game's first run in the second inning. The Terrapins added another run on a Princeton error in the third.
Haddad gave the Tigers their first runner in scoring position in the fourth frame. With one out, he walked and then stole second. A groundout advanced the freshman to third before a great catch in right center field from Maryland's Marty Costes finished the inning and kept Princeton of the scoreboard.
The Tigers had another scoring threat in the fifth. After a strikeout, Alex Dickinson and Cody Phillips had back-to-back singles. The Tigers couldn't push across a run as a strikeout and a running grab by Maryland's Zach Jancarski ended the chance.
Princeton put together one more rally in its last at-bat. Pinch-hitter Nick Hernandez led off the stanza with a double and then pinch-hitter Zack Belski walked. The next hitter, Paul Tupper, hit a long flyout to right field, moving Hernandez to third base. The Terrapins' closer, Andrew Miller, got a double-play to hold off the Tigers and secure the victory.
Maryland improves to 12-6 this season while Princeton dropped to 2-9 overall. The Tigers will continue its Spring Break trip at Old Dominion on Tuesday. First pitch is scheduled for 6 p.m.
