Old Dominion Uses Big Eighth Inning To Beat Princeton
March 21, 2017 | Baseball
NORFOLK, Va. – The Old Dominion Monarchs used a big eighth inning to rally and take down the Princeton Tigers, 14-4, at Bud Metheny Complex on Tuesday evening.
Conor Nolan had three hits while five other Tigers posted a hit in the game. Ryan Smith struck out a career-high six Monarchs in four relief frames.
Princeton opened up the game with three straight walks before Nick Hernandez lifted a sacrifice fly to right field. The next hitter, Danny Baer, lined a double down the right field line to put the Tigers in front, 2-0. Joseph Flynn followed with a two-run single to right center, giving Princeton a four-run frame. Old Dominion got one back with a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the inning.
The Monarchs put pressure on Princeton's starter, Chad Powers, getting runners on second and third with one out in the second stanza. The 2016 Ivy League Pitcher of the Year got a strikeout and fly out to handle the jam. Powers struck out two more hitters, finishing with four punch outs in three innings of work.
In the fifth inning, the Tigers put the first two batters on base with singles. A sacrifice bunt moved them to second and third, but Old Dominion got out of the situation with a fly out and fielder's choice.
Smith retired seven straight before running into trouble in the seventh. Back-to-back walks and a bunt put two runners in scoring position with one out for the top of the Monarchs' order. The sophomore answered by getting two strikeouts to complete the frame.
In the bottom of the eighth inning, Old Dominion scored 13 runs on eight hits, four walks and one error. These two teams continue play tomorrow at Metheny Complex. First pitch is scheduled for 3 p.m.
