McCarthy Added To U.S. U-21 Team
March 20, 2017 | Field Hockey
PRINCETON, N.J. – A wonderful junior season continued for Ryan McCarthy as she was named to the United States Field Hockey U-21 team yesterday.
Â
That brings the total Princeton representatives on the U-21 squad to four as McCarthy joins Maddie Bacskai, Julianna Tornetta '21 and Sophia Tornetta. Elise Wong and MaryKate Neff '21 are currently on the U.S. U-19 unit as well.
Â
"Ryan has done an amazing job over the last seven months to put herself in position to make the U-21 team," said Princeton head coach Carla Tagliente. "There are very few players in collegiate field hockey that can impact the outcome of a game as quickly as she can. She's an exciting player to watch and we are looking forward to seeing her continue to develop at the next level."
Â
McCarthy had a breakout 2016 campaign, leading to her being selected to National Field Hockey Coaches' Association (NFHCA) Mid-Atlantic All-Region first team. She had a career-high 14 goals and 33 points for the Tigers that advanced to their seventh Final Four in program history.
Â
In her two seasons prior, the junior had 12 goals combined. McCarthy collected points in the team's first four games and three of its last four contests while completing the season with three multi-goal outings. She led the team with five game-winning tallies, putting the Tigers on top vs. then-No. 10 Delaware, American, Columbia, Towson and No. 5 Penn State in the first round of the NCAA Tournament.
