March 20, 2017 | Women's Water Polo
CLAREMONT, Calif. – The Princeton Tigers will continue their West Coast trip with three more matches, Pomona-Pitzer, No. 15 Long Beach State and No. 1 USC this week.
So far in Princeton's four games in California, Haley Wan has been the team's standout performer, posting 12 goals. On Saturday, the Tigers picked up a 5-4 victory over No. 12 San Diego State as Wan snagged the game-winner with 3:09 to go. No. 6 Arizona State held off Princeton, 7-6, as the sophomore amassed a hat trick.
Yesterday, Princeton rattled off two more victories with a 7-3 decision over No. 22 CSU Bakersfield and 11-8 result over the Cal State East Bay Pioneers. Against CSU Bakersfield, Ashleigh Johnson was the star of the show as she made 18 saves on 22 Roadrunners' shots. Wan had a four-goal outing against CSU Bakersfield and a three-goal performance vs. Cal State East Bay.
Speaking of Ashleigh Johnson, the Olympic Goal Medalist is a finalist for the Amateur Athletic Union (AAU) Sullivan Award. Voting ends Mar. 22. You can vote once a day for Ashleigh here.
On Tuesday, head coach Luis Nicolao's unit will take on Pomona-Pitzer. The Tigers have never lost in four tries against Pomona-Pitzer. The game is scheduled for 10 p.m. (7 p.m. PT) and will be streamed. Wednesday's matchup vs. No. 15 Long Beach State (10 p.m., 7 p.m. PT) will be the Tigers' eighth meeting all-time against the 49ers. Long Beach State holds a 6-1 advantage over Princeton. The Tigers finish their California trip against No. 1 USC on Thursday (8 p.m., 5 p.m. PT). Princeton has never beaten USC, last facing the Trojans in 2012. That game will be featured on the Pac-12 Los Angeles Network.
Wan's ridiculous 12-goal weekend vaunted her into the team lead with 29 goals this season. The Tigers now have four 20+ goal scores in Wan, Amy Castellano, Chelsea Johnson and Morgan Hallock. Ashleigh Johnson has allowed just 49 goals in 14 games with 160 saves and .766 save percentage.
