Lightweights Split Opener, Close With Fosburgh Cup Win
March 25, 2017 | Men's Rowing - Lightweight
Head coach Marty Crotty wanted to give his Princeton lightweights an early taste of what Eastern Sprints would be like, so he lined up a pair of Cup races for the opening day of the 2017 season. He would certainly sign up for the same results in May, as his squad finished the long day with an evening victory.
Princeton won five of the six overall races against both Navy and Georgetown, though the Midshipmen won the Murtaugh Cup in the morning with a 3.6-second win over the Tiger 1V. Princeton won a pair of tight races in the 2V (3.7 seconds) and the 3V (3.3 seconds), and then got off the water for a few hours before resuming its rivalry with Georgetown.
The Tigers retained the Fosburgh Cup with a hard-earned win over the Hoyas. Princeton finished the 1V nightcap in 6:20.5, 2.5 seconds ahead of Georgetown. Both the 2V and the 3V were able to create more comfortable margins; the 2V finished in 6:20.6 to win by 15.6 seconds, while the 3V finished in 6:29.1 to win by 20.8 seconds.
Princeton will be able to take both experiences and build on it for a big upcoming weekend; the new Campbell Cup will be introduced April 1 and be awarded to the winner of the Princeton-Columbia race on Lake Carnegie, which will be streamed live on the Ivy League Digital Network. The regatta is scheduled to begin at 10:15 am.
