Lightweight Men Face IRA Champ Columbia In Campbell Cup Debut
March 30, 2017 | Men's Rowing - Lightweight
The Princeton men's lightweights faced one significant test last weekend, racing twice against a pair of annual rivals during its opening day of the 2017 season.
This Saturday, the Tigers will face a different, and arguably more daunting test. It includes both an old rival and a new trophy.
The Tiger lightweights will face reigning IRA champion Columbia Saturday morning on Lake Carnegie in the second half of a regatta with the heavyweights. The regatta — which will be streamed live on the Ivy League Digital Network — will begin with a 10:20 3V race, and will go every 20 minutes until the 1V showdown at 11 am. The varsity boats will be competing for the newly introduced Campbell Cup, which was donated to Columbia during the offseason and now assures the annual continuation of this rivalry.
The full schedule is below, and you can watch it live on the Ivy League Digital Network.
Columbia has had the upper hand in this series recently. Factoring in grand finals at both the Eastern Sprints and IRA Championships, Columbia has taken 12 of the last 13 races against Princeton; the lone exception was the 2014 Sprints final, when the Tigers edged Columbia by about a quarter-second to earn the bronze medal.
Of course, history won't mean much at 11 am Saturday — the history of this series, or either of Princeton's races last weekend. After a loss to Navy in the morning, the Tigers rebounded in the evening with a win over Georgetown. This is about the present, and a chance to push itself against the current standard in the sport.
"The races on Saturday provided valuable tests from which we can take away a new commitment to focus and unity," said junior Jim Sincavage. "Every chance we get to line up against another team is an opportunity to test our preparation and improve as a crew."
